The Aves Whitting sampler hails from St. Martin In The Fields, Westminister, London. The configuration of alphabets and numerals across the top third of the sampler, make it an interesting art form of needlework.
A lollipop border highlights a beautiful central trellis and shamrock design unusual for the time period in which Aves lived, perhaps a salute to her English and Irish ancestors. The original sampler was stitched with vibrant silks, revealing that Aves had the means and access to fine materials when working her 1789 sampler.
Stitched on 32 ct Lambswool from Wichelt Imports in Au Ver A Soie stranded silk, the stitch count is 211W X 231H, and is executed in cross stitch and satin stitch. The original sampler is in the collection of Historic Handworkes®.
